Cegléd: colourful and monumental crossroads

Cegléd is situated in the central Hungarian Lowlands, east of the river Donau and west of the river Tisza. From Ferihegy airport it is a mere 40 minutes by car. The town is an important railway junction and has a regular service on Budapest. This rural provincial town with its many terraces is in itself worth while a stay. From spring until autumn many flower beds adorn the parks and town squares. A walk about town takes you along monumental churches, statues, ancient and modern buildings, through parks with fountains designed by local sculptors. Cegléd has a drum museum. Viniculture and fruit cultivation play an important role in the past and present of Cegléd.

Cegléd has 14 thermal springs. The recently opened thermal spa and relaxation centre Ceglédi Termál Fürdö attracts both Hungarian and foreign tourists. Enjoy the healing effect of the mineral water in the indoor and outdoor pools of the complex. This modern aquapark offers relaxation and entertainment for the entire family. Have a look at www.cegleditermal.hu where you can obtain information.

Cegléd is an ideal starting point for exploration of the puszta. In the immediate vicinity you find the village Csemö, one of Europe's most beautiful villages. Don't miss out on a visit to the Lowland's beautiful capital of Kecskemét. Barankpálinka, the local apricot brandy and the bright ceramic façades of the Jugendstil architecture made composer Zoltán Kodály's birth town world-famous.

Plenty to undertake in Kecskemét. Unique toys are for sale in the toy museum, and there is a workshop for making them. Visit a conservatory concert, or relax in a thermal bath. Kecskemét has plenty of pubs and is an ideal shopping town.

The spectacular Tanyacsárda-horseshows at Lajosmizse are a must. You are welcomed by horsemen in traditional costumes. You may try if you are as skilled with the whip as they are. Explore the puszta by horse and cab.

A smallway steam train to Bugac Puszta departs from Kecskemét. Bugac Puszta is part of Hungary's largest nature reserve, Kiskunság. Discover the traditional Hungarian way of life at the local museum. You can explore Bugac Puszta on foot or take a ride in a horse and cab. Legend has it that 7 Magyar chieftains made a pact here, which is still seen as the first step to the formation of the Hungarian nation. In a complete 1900's village several crafts are on display, with products are for sale. Of course there is a horseshow, where horsemen show their talents in archery.

In the Tisza river bend, at 30 minutes by car, is a nature reserve where you can enjoy canoeing or swimming, cycling and hiking, or take a boat trip.

Wrap yourself in Hungarian hospitality...
